Brewery: Gallo

Origin: Guatemala City, Guatemala
Style: Lager
ABV: 4.9%

Guatemala’s best beer - a decent lager that holds stands head and shoulders above the local big brands. It’s proudly independent having been fighting off hostile takeovers from AmBev for the last decade - hats off for that alone.

The label is all about the cock (ahem)  - as in the ‘gallo’. You see this fella everywhere over there. It’s one of those dominant brands from a small country that becomes iconic, almost a patriotic duty to enjoy - something Gallo have tapped into for years. Check out the design evolution here - the early designs showing the brewery’s German roots and how they switched from a traditional illustrative approach to something more graphic and impactful in 1960.
