Brewery: J.W. Lees
Label design: Squad & Daren Newman

Origin: Manchester, England
Style: Strong Ale
ABV: 6.5%

Another beefy brew from the industrial north. Moonraker has been around since the 50s, and Lees even longer - one of the old regional family brewers that has survived since 1828.

There’s a great write-up from brand strategists Squad that pinpoints the challenges faced by a lot of breweries like Lees - being squeezed from above by big multinationals and from below by young Turks from the craft ale scene. Regardless Lees make decent beer enjoyed by many and this refreshed branding immediatedly gives them a headstart on the shelves.

This new Moonraker label is one of the highlights - c/o of Daren Newman’s penmanship. That creepy hand gripping a crescent moon, the moonlit wheatfield and the lunar phases - fitting work for this dark ale.
